How we ensure data quality in the field
Enumerator training and certification
Each enumerator completes survey-specific training before deployment. Pilot interviews, inter-rater reliability checks and supervisor sign-off before field start.
GPS and timestamp verification
All interviews are GPS-tagged and timestamped at collection. Back-checks are run on a random sample. Outlier GPS coordinates trigger automatic supervisor review.
Daily data review and cleaning
Submissions are reviewed daily for completeness, logic errors and outliers. Enumerators are briefed on flagged issues before the next day's field work. Clean datasets delivered on agreed timelines.
Reaching rural Kenya without smartphones or data
In areas where smartphone penetration is low and mobile data is intermittent, USSD delivers surveys to any basic phone on any network. No app, no data bundle, no internet connection needed.

Field data collection in Kenya: common questions
How do you collect field data across all 47 counties?
We maintain a network of trained field enumerators across all 47 counties, activated on a programme-by-programme basis. County supervisors manage daily targets, GPS verification and data quality. Enumerators are recruited locally for county-specific work and speak the local languages required for the target population.
What collection tools do you use?
KoBoCollect and ODK for smartphone-based collection (offline-capable, GPS-tagged), REDCap for health and clinical research, and custom USSD tools for feature-phone environments. Tool selection depends on respondent profile, connectivity conditions and client data system requirements.
Can you collect data in areas without mobile internet?
Yes. ODK Collect and KoBoCollect both support offline data entry with sync on reconnection. For areas where smartphones are not accessible to respondents, USSD delivers surveys over basic voice networks without any data connection. Both approaches are used routinely in ASAL counties including Turkana, Marsabit, Wajir and Isiolo.
What languages do your enumerators work in?
English and Kiswahili across all counties. County-specific deployments include enumerators with proficiency in Kikuyu (Central), Luo (Nyanza), Kamba (Eastern), Kalenjin (Rift Valley), Luhya (Western), Meru, Somali (North Eastern) and other languages as specified in the survey brief.

Yes. A significant part of our field data work is for NGOs and development programmes funded by USAID, FCDO, the Gates Foundation and bilateral donors. We are familiar with M&E frameworks including LSMS, DHS and USAID's Performance Management Plans. We can align data collection with your MEL system and deliver clean datasets in your required format.
